Voluntary Initiatives

Official Participation

To help us manage our impacts and maximize the benefits to communities, we use a combination of internal and external frameworks. To this end, IAMGOLD has joined a number of international standards and working groups. These initiatives help ensure that we adhere to high standards from an economic, social and governance perspective.

IS0 14001

A standard for environmental management systems that has been developed by the International Organization for Standardization. It defines what the organization should do to manage processes that influence the impact of the organization’s activities on the environment.

Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Framework

The Mining Association of Canada has developed an audit protocol known as ‘Towards Sustainable Mining’ that provides audit guidance on key parameters of best practices within sustainability. In 2011, a new component of the audit was created to address health and safety. This has given us the opportunity to deploy the health and safety portion of the audit and measure performance on a site-by-site basis, which can then be validated externally.

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an independent not-for-profit organization focused on driving greenhouse gas emissions reduction and sustainable water use by business and cities. IAMGOLD publicly discloses their greenhouse gas emissions, water management, and climate change strategies to the CDP, thus committing ourselves to providing a transparent account of our environmental impacts.

Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI)

IAMGOLD is an official supporting company for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). We applaud the efforts of the EITI to establish a global standard for transparency of revenues related to nature resource extraction.

Currently, there are three countries that IAMGOLD operates within which have been deemed EITI Compliant: Burkina Faso, Peru and Mali. Within each of these countries, we are required to disclose all payments made to governments. These payments are then independently verified and reconciled against amounts received by the government, ensuring greater transparency over how revenues are managed.

Moving forward, we believe such transparency is imperative when operating on a global basis. We will continue to support and promote the Principles and Criteria of the EITI, as well as any efforts of our other operating countries to become EITI Compliant.
